The Romanian Chess Federation turns 100 years old on January 4, 2025, thus reaching a centenary of Romanian chess. The anniversary was marked at the Romanian Chess Gala, where Romanian chess personalities, members of the Royal House, officials and partners participated. Romania is one of the founding members of the International Chess Federation, thanks to the representation by Mr. Ion Gudju in Paris, in the summer of 1924, a representation that will then be the basis for the foundation of the Romanian Chess Federation, on January 4, 1925. From Florin Gheorghiu – the first grandmaster of Romania and Elisabeta Polihroniade, queen of Romanian chess and until now, our country has had 27 grandmasters and 18 grandmasters, climbed the Olympic podium 7 times and offered the world the youngest grandmaster of the moment: Bogdan Deac in 2016. «January 4, 2025 marks a unique moment: the centenary of the Romanian Chess Federation. It is a proud occasion and a responsibility for us, those who have the honor of leading the destiny of this noble sport. We celebrate not only 100 years of tradition, but also a future that promises to be just as bright. Chess is more than a game – it is a path to excellence», says Vlad Ardeleanu, president of the Romanian Chess Federation. In 2025, the Romanian Chess Federation will organize, for the first time in the history of Romanian chess, the European Chess Championship for Seniors, an international competition, in which over 400 athletes, 100 international grandmasters, from 50 sports federations. This is one of the most important international chess events that our country will host. ​
