Ethereum and quantum attacks: What is the «Lean» network proposed by Justin Drake?

Lean Ethereum: A response to the challenges of quantum

In his article, Justin Drake highlights the importance of preparing Ethereum in the era of quantum computers. These machines, although not yet operational on a large scale, could one day be able to break current cryptography systems, thus endangering the safety of blockchains like Ethereum. To counter this threat, Drake offers the use of zero knowledge (Zero-Knowledge Prooffs) to secure and make it verifiable Ethereum's execution layer. This evidence is not automatically resistant to quantum attacks in themselves, but their use opens the way to architectures based on post-quantic cryptographic primitives. This technology would check transactions without revealing the underlying data. However, resistance to quantum attacks will depend on the type of ZK evidence used : Some, like conventional snarks, remain vulnerable, while others, such as Starks or evidence based on post-quantity patterns, could offer better protection.

Increased simplification and safety

Besides the quantum resistancethe concept of Lean Ethereum also aims to simplify the technical infrastructure of the network. Drake notably suggests the adoption of a RISC-V framework, a simplified IT architecture that could reduce the risk of security flaws while facilitating development on the platform. This simplification is crucial according to Drake, because it would make Ethereum more accessible to developers while limiting potential entry points for attackers. By reducing the complexity of the network, Ethereum could thus become both safer and more efficient.

A vision shared by the community

Drake's proposal is part of a broader trend within the Ethereum community. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, had already expressed his desire to simplify the network to make it as robust as Bitcoin. Other researchers work in parallel on the question of quantum resistance in the blockchain. While the era of quantum computers is looming on the horizon, initiatives such as Lean Ethereum are essential to guarantee the sustainability and safety of blockchains. By combining simplification and technological innovations, Ethereum could thus remain at the forefront of decentralization while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow.
