♦ At the level of the whole economy, most banking companies are those in the field of services, while the industry and constructions have a comparable number of companies with loans (around 21,000), and there are few funded companies in agriculture.
The industry sector is an important engine for any economy, but in Romania the number of companies in this field that are credited by banks and the number of funding in this direction are not very numerous, only one of ten credits going to the industry, on average. The volume of loans for industry is not very consistent. The lack of appetite of banks to support the industry is seen in figures, in charts. In the top 100 the largest companies in Romania after the turnover there is no Romanian private capital company (CAEN C code – the processing industry. And the companies in the processing industry present in the top 100 are all with foreign capital and are only 26 out of 100.
The number of companies in the sector of the loan industry (from banks or IFNs) reached 21,343 at the end of the first semester (S1) from 2025, close to the level of last year, as indicated by the NBR data transmitted to ZF. Over time, the growth was slow, five years ago, for example, almost 19,000 banking companies in the industry. That is, only 2,370 companies in the industry were added in five years to banking companies. The about 21,300 companies in the industry had at the end of S1/2025 a number of 71,299 credits, indicating that a company has on average three credits, but in reality there are some companies have a single bank funding, while others have more loans. Regarding the balance of loans granted by banks and commitments made for the industry sector, the level oscillated around 100 billion lei, at the end of S1/2025 reaching 127.2 billion lei, according to BNR data, half from the volume of bank funding, for example. At the level of the whole economy, most banking companies are those in the field of services, while industry and construction have a comparable number of companies with credits (around 21,000), and in agriculture there are few funded companies. The trend of recent years has been to increase the number of credited companies, but the advance is slow. Regarding the contribution of the industry to the economic growth, at GDP, we find that in 2024 the share of the industry in the formation of the GDP of Romania was 17.5%. This sector has registered a decrease in the volume of the activity, continuing to increase the total GDP, but maintaining an important weight in the economic structure. The Romanian industry depends a lot on the European industry. For example, ten years ago the contribution of the industry to GDP formation was much higher, 30%.
