♦ Banca Transilvania, UniCredit and Garanti had in S1/2025 the biggest increases of assets ♦ Most banks in the top 10 were with jumps of assets over inflation ♦ On the top of the big banks were in S1/2025 Banca Transilvania, BCR and CEC Bank.
Most of the big banks in Romania in the Top 10 managed in the first semester (S1) of 2025 to increase their assets compared to S1/2024, with growth rhythms oscillating from 5% to 16%, over inflation, which was around 5% in the first part of the year. And the net assets at the level of the entire banking system made an annual jump of 7%, up to a record of 894 billion lei. In the Top 10 large banks, only EXIM Banca Româneas registered a decrease in assets compared to S1/2024. The first semester also brought a substantial profit at the level of the Romanian banking system, about 7.4 billion lei, close to the one from S1/2024, in the context of still high interest. These results reported by banks come in a context characterized by the stagnation of the economy in S1/2025 and the slowdown of the lending. Although the assets for most large banks were on an upward trend in S1/2025, Banca Transilvania, UniCredit Bank Romania and Garanti BBVA were highlighted with the highest increases in assets compared to S1/2024, of 16%, 15%, respectively 13%, exceeding the annual advance of the assets of the entire banking system. On the podium in the top of the big banks were also in S1/2025 Banca Transilvania, BCR and CEC Bank. The assets of the 10 largest banks passed 800 billion lei, approaching 90% of the total assets of the banking system. At the top of the top of the 10 largest banks in recent years there has been a close fight between Raiffeisen, ING Bank and UniCredit for 5, 6 and 7 places, the levels of the assets of these banks being very close. However, UniCredit merged with Alpha Bank and anticipates that he will climb above the top, right 3rd, this transaction being completed on August 15, so it becomes visible in figures with the financial results at nine months. The two banks present until last year in places 9 and 10 in the top, respectively OTP Bank, taken by Banca Transilvania, and Alpha Bank, taken by UniCredit, were no longer included in the ranking on S1/2025. OTP assets have been incorporated into BT assets, integration being completed in the spring of this year, and Alpha assets have been encompassed in UniCredit assets in August. Under these conditions, in principle, it would climb into the top 10 big banks Garanti Bbva and Libra Internet Bank, but for Citibank, which in 2024 ranked 12th in the top of the banks, between Garanti and Libra, no figures are available for S1/2025, so this top can record changes. Neither Vista Bank, near the Top 10, did not report the assets for S1/2025.
