Rzeszow and Lublin airports in southeastern Poland reopened at noon on Saturday after intense military activity in the airspace led to the temporary suspension of civilian flights. The measure was taken in the context of the most extensive attack launched by Russia on Ukraine since 2026. The operational command of the Polish army said that there was «no violation of Polish airspace», emphasizing that the operation was a «preventive» one, aimed at securing the areas near the border with Ukraine, according to Reuters. Later, the authorities announced the end of the operation and thanked NATO and the German Air Force, «whose aircraft contributed to ensuring the safety of Polish airspace.» The suspension of activity at the two airports was announced by the Polish Agency for Air Navigation Services, which explained that the measure was necessary «to ensure the free operation of military aviation». In parallel, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a notification informing that airports are temporarily inaccessible due to military activities related to state security. Rzeszow is of major strategic importance, being NATO's main logistical hub for transporting weapons to Ukraine since February 2022, since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. The region is used to increased security measures, but Saturday's events have once again generated tension among the population. The decision to activate protective measures came after Russia launched a massive wave of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to the authorities in Kiev, approximately 70 missiles and 450 drones were launched over several regions, including Kiev, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporozhye and Odesa.
