The positions on the boards of directors of large companies come with a high level of responsibility and an intense work dynamic, reflected also in the way of remuneration. In these structures, incomes are no longer calculated per meeting, but as monthly allowances, and involvement goes beyond formal participation in meetings, explained Carmen Micu, CEO, Envisia-Board of Elites, a business school with a focus on training students for company boards. In very large companies, where decisions have a major strategic impact, the activity of the board involves extensive meetings and a sustained work pace. «In very large companies, where the responsibility is very high, the dynamic of discussion and work in the board is different», explained Carmen Micu on ZF Live, a show produced with the support of Orange Business. The Electro-Alfa example is relevant: «the sessions are very lucrative, they are very long, a session can last from three to a whole day. If we don't finish today, we meet again in two weeks or we meet several times a month», said Carmen Micu at ZF Live. This level of involvement also changes the logic of remuneration. «Here the remuneration is different. One is thinking of a remuneration per month and not per meeting», which indicates a payment for continuous contribution, not one-off. The differences appear in the case of smaller companies, where the boards function with monthly meetings and activity in committees. «I will give the case of a smaller company, which operates differently and which meets monthly, which works in committees». Even here, the remuneration is monthly, but at a lower level: «members are remunerated somewhere around 2,500 euros per month», an amount that includes both the meetings and the work in the committees. The differences in organization and pay reflect the complexity of the role and the size of the company, and positions on large boards remain reserved for executives with experience and availability for a high volume of strategic work.
