The resistance is organized. In October 2025, Google threw a chill with its advances on quantum computersbecause the latter could in particular threaten cryptography at the heart of Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrencies. Many players in the ecosystem have looked into the issue to find solutions for quantum resistance. This is particularly the case of Ripple which has just unveiled a four-step plan to protect the XRP Ledger.

The key points of this article:
Ripple has revealed a four-step plan to protect the XRP Ledger from future threats posed by quantum computers.
Ripple's plan calls for a transition to quantum computing-resistant cryptography by 2028.

Ripple reveals plan to protect XRP from quantum computers

This April 20, 2026, the teams of Ripple revealed a ambitious plan aimed at protecting the XRP Ledger (XRPL) of the potential threats that will be posed by quantum computers (in a more or less distant future depending on estimates). So, Ayo Akinyelethe head of engineering at RippleX (the development and innovation branch of Ripple), details a four-phase transition towards cryptography resistant to quantum computers (“ Post-Quantum ), with a comprehensive preparation objective by 2028. This plan therefore aims to ensure that the XRP Ledger stay secure in the face of advances in quantum computing, while enabling a smooth transition for developers and users.

The 4 phases of the plan to move the XRP Ledger into the Post-Quantum era

Initially, the Ripple teams wish prepare the XRP network to what they call the “ Q-Day ”, namely the day where quantum computers will be a real threat. For this, Ripple is considering a type update hard fork to prepare for migration to resistant signatures to quantum computers. This would protect exposed accounts and enable secure recovery for all account owners. At the same time, in what it includes in phase 2, Ripple will assess quantum vulnerability you XRP Ledger et test the defenses recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This phase will make it possible to understand the compromises necessary to integrate post-quantum cryptography. Once the tests are carried out, Ripple will gradually integrate quantum computer-resistant signatures on its test network for developers. This 3rd phase will allow developers to s’adapter to new signature methods without disrupting the main network. Finally, Ripple plans to fully deploy post-quantum cryptography on the mainnet by 2028. This 4th phase will mark the end of transition and will ensure that the XRP Ledger is fully protected against quantum threats. If Ripple is preparing to resist quantum computers, this is also the case for other blockchain networks. Indeed, for its part, the developer community of Bitcoin (BTC) is also working on solutions, like BIP 360 and 361 : Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIP) to prepare for resistance to quantum computers. Post-Quantum adaptation is accelerating everywhere.
