The phenomenon called «TikTokification» briefly described means: the adaptation of content, speech and even cultural tastes according to the mechanism of platforms based on fast scrolling and immediate reactions. Virality is not a new thing. The difference lies in speed and mechanism. Today, cultural success is measured in seconds of retention, in the number of shares and in the ability to generate quick reactions. The algorithm favors content that grabs instantly, that causes strong emotion or that can be consumed without major cognitive effort. In this context, complex ideas, nuances or broad arguments become more difficult to support and promote. Not only the form changes, but also the substance. The books are summarized in 30 seconds. Movies are reduced to «memorable» scenes. Social topics are transformed into trends, and debates into short and sharp retorts. Culture becomes fragmented, adapted to an alert rhythm. It doesn’t necessarily matter how solid an idea is, but how well it can be packaged. And everything should be summarized in 30 seconds, maximum 1 minute. At the same time, TikTokification democratizes access to visibility.

Anyone can produce content and influence cultural conversations. There is no longer a monopoly of cultural elites. A book recommendation can come from an unknown creator, not just a literary critic. An artist can become famous without a record label. There is also the positive dimension: the openness and diversification of voices. The problem arises when virality becomes the main validation criterion. Culture risks being shaped not by relevance or depth, but by compatibility with the algorithm. Content that requires time, patience and reflection is at a disadvantage. Attention is the main currency. A subtle inversion is thus produced: it is not the culture that uses the platforms, but the platforms begin to shape the culture. Artists, journalists, educators get to create thinking about how the content will perform, not just what they want to convey. The form starts to dictate the message – everything has to be packaged in seconds, with easy-to-understand language, with images/elements that keep the audience there. In recent years, we have gained access, speed, exposure. But we seem to have lost patience for complexity and availability for deep dialogue. As for patience – it is clear even for platforms that we no longer have it. Instagram and TikTok have since last year implemented the option to see a video (those in vertical format) at twice the speed if you tap the screen on the right side. This way you can watch a 30 second video in 15 seconds. TikTokification isn’t just about short videos. It means a culture of quick reaction, immediate impact and confirmation by numbers. It means that relevance is decided in seconds. And in a world where visibility equates to value, virality becomes the new cultural filter. It remains to be seen whether we will be able to use these mechanisms without letting the algorithm become the ultimate curator of our tastes.
