Energy generates a record year for investments: over 2,800 new MW were commissioned in 2025 from solar, wind, prosumers and storage. With the Mintia gas plant, of 1,770 MW, and the eventual completion of the Iernut plant, the year 2026 has every chance to be even better

The most important phenomenon visible last year in local energy was the scale of investments in energy production. The big investors are here, the construction sites of hundreds of megawatts went to continuous fire, the energy entrepreneurs had work again after a decade of freezing. And this effervescence can be seen in the official figures that make 2025 the best year in terms of installed capacity in the last 30 years. Thus, the data from Transelectrica, the operator of the national transport system, show that last year 1,240 MW were installed in large-scale solar energy projects and 41 MW for wind energy.

This track record has been somewhat overshadowed by the continued capacity shutdowns in the coal-fired power generation sector. Transelectrica data also show that last year 857 MW of capacity from coal-fired power plants were taken out of operation. Basically, drawing a line, the national energy system finished the year with 19,178 MW of capacity in projects larger than 5 MW, 567 MW more than at the end of 2024. This total includes coal plants, hydrocarbons, hydro plants, nuclear plants, wind and solar parks. But the 567 MW of net capacity is not everything. The prosumers were another large-scale phenomenon that completed the evolution in the area of large investments. Transelectrica data show that over 96,000 energy consumers became producers last year through investments in their own generation units. In terms of capacity, the prosumer club reached a total of 3,283 MW at the end of the year, a jump of 1,053 MW compared to the beginning of 2025. Investments made by prosumers, alongside those made in large-scale parks, were complemented by the visible advance in the area of energy storage. The transformation of green energy from a form of variable production to one in the band through storage has become a business strategy and a factor that contributes to energy security. Moreover, the cheapening of storage equipment has in turn put a shoulder to the advance of the market. As estimated by ZF together with specialists in the sector, energy storage projects have reached a capacity of 494 MW (ZF's estimate was 500 MW), a major jump from the 137 MW with which 2025 began. In the end, strictly as new investments put into operation, over 2,800 MW were installed in the local energy system this year in solar, wind, prosumer or storage projects. If we take into account the closures that continued in the area of energy production from coal, where almost 860 MW of capacity were withdrawn, the result is a net commissioning of about 2,000 MW, from all sources, which turns the year 2025 into a record for investments in the local energy sector since 1992. And 2026 can be even better.
