♦ The imports of agri -food products of Romania reached in 2024 an unprecedented level of 11.1 billion euros and generated a deficit of 5 billion euros, according to the NIS data ♦ in the category of vegetables and fruits, the annual imports of 1.5 billion ♦ On Avocado, Romania paid 50.7 million euros last year and Florin Barbu on the first place in his category. In fact, bananas and tomatoes are there.

Avocado, an exotic fruit that has been put more and more in the shopping basket in recent years, would unbalance the commercial balance with agri -food products of Romania, especially in the category of vegetables and fruits, where the annual imports of 1.5 billion euros, considers Florin Ionuţ Barbu, the Minister of Agriculture. However, the statistics contradict him. Romania imports much larger amounts of tomatoes and apples, which it pays more and which could be produced locally. «Now, in the first place, it is avocado for fruit and vegetable imports. In fact, in 2024 Romania imported avocado of 50.7 million euros, according to data from Eurostat. In the first semester of 2025, imports were 25.3 million euros, according to the same source. Thus, the fruit became famous in the last days and a drop in an ocean of agri-food imports of 11.1 billion euros last year. And in no case, neither last year nor this year, Avocado is in the first place. In the category of fruits, bananas remain «king», dominating the top years in a row, and in the category of vegetables, in the first position are the tomatoes, the European statistics show. Then, the grapes and apples follow, which Romania could produce locally, but brings more and more from the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, in 2024, Romania imported tomatoes worth 167 million euros, the majority in Turkey, reaching a historical level, despite the fact that from 2017 the production of tomatoes in protected spaces is supported. And they are followed by potatoes and peppers, although the minister claims he has invested and will continue to invest in the vegetable sector.
