The United States has threatened to impose 17% customs tariffs on agricultural exports of the European Union, in a dramatic escalation of commercial conflict with Brussels, writes FT. This last-minute movement occurred before the deadline on July 9 for the conclusion of a commercial agreement, after which the US announced that they will apply 20% rates on all the goods from the EU, in the absence of an agreement. President Donald Trump calls for Brussels to give American companies extensive exemptions from European regulations and to reduce the commercial surplus that EU has in relation to the US. Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commercial Commissioner, received this warning on Thursday, during meetings in Washington, and the information was transmitted to the 27 ambassadors of the EU Member States on Friday. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, said on Thursday that he hopes for a «principle agreement» that will allow the negotiations until a complete agreement is completed.
