Romania should strategically calculate its chances of attracting funds from the budget that will be allocated by the EU for deep tech projects and bet on those areas where it can compete and attract resources, is the opinion of Val Mureşan, co-founder of the ABQ Institute and advisor for digitization and smart city of the mayor of Timisoara. «I think it's important to assume that if Europe says it's putting a bunch of billions into deep tech to catch up with the United States, China and other more advanced areas, (…) let's think about how we can get as much of this big pie as possible. And I think here it's very important to think strategically. We're not going to reinvent machine learning, maybe we're not going to make quantum processors with physics particles, because it is hard to catch up with those who are already pioneers. But what can we still do in this deep tech map? And there we somehow have to strategically say, we can't do this thing because we don't have that much money, but we can do it because we need more brains than infrastructure and so on. And this is one thing where academia… has to step up and say, folks, look, the science behind it is like that, and that's how we think we can do this or that,» said Val Mureşan during a debate about the local innovation ecosystem, organized as part of the PROW 2025 conference in Timişoara – which is dedicated to the development of digital products, including the technologies behind it as well as marketing activities and the creation of a business plan. «Corporations have taught us a lot, engineering, business and so on and we are at a point where I think we are able with a little courage to overturn this picture a little where from other places of the planet we receive contracts that give us work and we are an outsourcing machine and we also take 10% there,» Mureşan said.
