Mihaela Lupu, CEO of UniCredit Bank Romania, the subsidiary on the local market of the Italian group of the same name, spoke in an interview with exclusively ZF about the bank's plans in the future, bringing details on the large business after completing the merger with the Romanian Bank Alpha Bank Romania. She also shared her vision regarding the process of consolidating the local banking market in perspective. «The conclusion of the merger is planned for August 15, 2025. We will become a stronger and better position for the future. Alpha Bank Romania, who I wish from now on, will enjoy improved financial experience, an extended network of branches and ATMs, the last generation banking technology. Both with long -term relationships and expertise on the market, ”said the head of UniCredit Bank Romania for ZF. The experience of UniCredit Bank Romania and Alpha Bank Romania, both in the corporate and retail segment, strengthens the position of the resulting bank, she added. «I must say that, from the beginning, there was a very good synergy between our teams and we completed each other.» We remember that this transaction came as a surprise in 2023, with secret negotiations until the announcement of the operation, the Romanian Bank with Greek capital Alpha Bank Romania, thus disappearing from the local market after almost three decades of existence. «This is the first acquisition that UniCredit makes in 15 years, signaling the inherent potential that we, as a business, see in Romania and in the Central and Eastern Europe region,» said in the announcement of the surprise merger, Andrea Orcel, CEO of the Italian group UniCredit Group. «The expected volume of the assets of UniCredit Bank, after the merger, will be around 115 billion lei, and the estimated market share for UniCredit Bank for 2025, after the merger, are: 11% after total assets, 13% after the total credits granted to legal and physical persons (here we include the contribution of our sub -consumer financing, which are consumed, both directly by this and through our branches) and 11% total warehouses attracted from customers, ”said the head of UniCredit Bank Romania. The new bank resulting from this merger targets the third position in the top of the big banks on the local market, UniCredit will fight with CEC Bank for this place. At the end of 2024, on the podium of the top banks in Romania were Banca Transilvania, BCR and CEC Bank, while UniCredit Bank held the seventh position. Speaking of the consolidation process on the banking market in Romania, the head of UniCredit Bank said that it has accelerated in recent years, mentioning that it is expected to continue, because the banking system has high operating costs: human resources, more complex regulations, risk costs, digitization, implementing ESG criteria and others. UniCredit will end the year 2025, after the merger with Alpha Bank, with about 300 branches, most of them being dedicated to retail activities. And together with the employees of Alpha Bank Romania who chose to be part of the UniCredit team, the number of employees will be around 4,800, Mihaela Lupu detailed.


115 billion lei (approximately) is the expected volume of the UniCredit Bank assets after the merger with Alpha Bank Romania.

The estimated market share for UniCredit Bank for 2025 after the merger are:

♦ 11% after total assets.

♦ 13% after the total of the credits granted to legal and natural persons (including the contribution of the UniCredit Consumer Financing).

♦ 11% after the total deposits attracted from customers.

About 300 branches would have unicredit at the end of 2025 after the merger with Alpha, most dedicated to retail activities.

About 4,800 will be the number of UniCredit employees with Alpha Bank Romania employees after merger.
