From ZF estimates based on data from market research companies, food supplements and vitamins generate 1 billion euros annually.
♦ From August 2025, food supplements have increased VAT from 9% as previously, to 21%. ♦ The first impact: increases between 10-30% from one day to another for certain products. There are also supplements that have remained at the same price. ♦ Prices are supported directly by patients, these products are not settled ♦ the total supplement market reaches 1 billion euros in Romania.
From day to day people who bought food supplements as a support for different health problems are forced to get more money out of pocket for the products used. The reason? VAT increased for food supplements from 9% to 21%, in the government attempt to raise money to the budget. Unlike drugs (which have a VAT of 11% of August), dietary supplements are fully paid by patients, without the possibility of being settled. This has been translated anyway in recent years through price increases in these products, being the way in which the producers and importers balanced the balance in the imposed price drug area. However, there are also products for which the price did not increase, but remained at the same level before the VAT increase. Some examples are Linex, a probiotic, Supdyn Energy, 30 tablets (58 lei) or at Vitamax, 15 capsules (36 lei) – both being produced for metabolism. The data are collected by ZF from the Tei Pharmacy website, which publishes prices and has no discounts based on the customer card, as other pharmaceutical units do. The prices were analyzed in two different days – July 31 and August 4, 2025, in the same products, including as a number of capsules or tablets.
