The entire banking system ended 2025 with a record profit of around 15.4 billion lei. they remained at high levels, given the persistence of inflation, which hovered around 5% in the first part of the year, and then increased to 10% after the increase of some taxes, including VAT.Last year lending continued, but at a slower pace, given that interest rates remained high in the first part of the year, incomes rose, the cost of risks was low and provisions were reduced. Also, some banks made substantial investments, especially in digitalization, and others also had costs related to mergers & acquisitions processes, which influenced the level of profits. The three most profitable banks in Romania in 2025 were Banca Transilvania, BCR and Raiffeisen Bank, with cumulative earnings of over 9 billion lei, representing almost 60% of the total profit of the system banking. And if we add BRD and ING Bank and put together the earnings of the five most profitable large banks in Romania, we reach about 12 billion lei, that is, over 75% of the total earnings of the Romanian system.
