In a context where artificial intelligence has already become part of students’ daily lives, whether we are talking about tasks solved with the help of digital tools, generated explanations or applications that personalize the learning process, schools are starting to be faced with a rapid and visible change. While some students already use these technologies to learn easier or faster, the education system in Romania has to keep up with this reality. I asked the Ministry of Education and the School Inspectorate several questions related to how the Romanian education system relates to artificial intelligence and its integration in schools. More specifically, I asked if there are persons, departments, working groups or appointed experts who have duties regarding the use of AI in pre-university education, if there are programs, projects, partnerships or budget allocations dedicated to the safe, ethical and controlled use of these tools in schools and how the institutions believe that education in Romania should be adapted to a reality in which artificial intelligence is becoming more and more present in the lives of students and teachers. The School Inspectorate of the Municipality of Bucharest refused to provide information about the use of artificial intelligence in schools, citing that «the requested information does not fall into the category of information of public interest», without clarifying how the subject is approached at the institutional level, and the Ministry of Education did not respond to the request sent.
In other countries, artificial intelligence has already been integrated into the education system, and Estonia is one of the most advanced examples in Europe. The national «AI Leap» program, launched in 2025, offers high school students and teachers access to artificial intelligence tools and specialized training sessions, with the aim of personalizing the learning process and adapting education to new technologies, according to information published on the official e-estonia.com platform. Estonian authorities emphasize that the goal is not to replace teachers, but to support them and develop digital skills and critical thinking among students, according to the official platform of the Estonian national program «AI Leap». In France, artificial intelligence is already being used in education as early as 2025, both by students and teachers, but in a state-regulated framework that establishes the conditions under which these tools can be used, with an emphasis on data protection, transparency and responsible use. Students are already using AI for learning and teachers for lesson planning, assessment and adapting content to classroom needs, according to France’s Ministry of Education. Finland has already integrated artificial intelligence in education, the authorities and educational institutions emphasize the development of digital skills and AI literacy from school, through courses and projects dedicated to the responsible use of technology. Among the best-known examples is the «AI-Driven Educators Academy» program, which aims to train teachers for the integration of AI in the educational process, according to information published by the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence. While more and more European states are already integrating artificial intelligence in education through dedicated programs, rules and strategies, in Romania the discussion seems to be still at an early stage at the institutional level. Although students are already actively using these smart tools, when will the Romanian education system also adapt?
