How many strangers have deposits in Romanian banks and how much money do they have according to FGDB data?
♦ Ten years ago the number of foreigners with bank deposits in Romania was smaller, but the amounts saved by them were larger ♦ Thus, in 2015 there were about 141,000 non -residents with bank deposits in Romania in the amount of over 50 billion (the equivalent of 11 billion euros at the foreign exchange rate) The Romanian banks increased in the first semester this year by 3,154, and the value of the amounts saved by them increased by about 4 billion lei (0.8 billion euros), respectively by 12.4%.

A number of 223,964 foreigners had at the end of the first semester (S1) of 2025 amounts saved in the Romanian banks, most of them being natural persons. And the total value of non -resident deposits totalize 35.7 billion lei (the equivalent of 7.1 billion euros), of which only 6 billion lei (1.2 billion euros) are covered deposits, according to the data of the bank deposits guarantee (FGDB). Specifically, at the end of S1/2025, 221,754 foreign natural persons and 2,210 non -resident companies were guaranteed. But, the real number of non -resident depositors (natural and legal persons) may be lower considering that at the level of FGDB statistics, people and companies that have deposits in several banks are counted. Thus, if a person has deposits in two banks, it is counted twice. The total number of the depositors included in the Guarantee Fund data is determined by summing the consolidated data reported by each credit institution, so that a person who has deposits to several credit institutions is highlighted several times.
