On March 6, Florida became the first US state to adopt a regulatory framework for stablecoins. The US Senate has passed SB 314, which is expected to be signed by Governor Ron DeSantis. Florida has been the leader of the Bitcoin ecosystem in the US, and with its latest stablecoin initiative, other states are expected to follow suit.

Key points of SB 314

At the March 6 meeting, Senator Burton explained the bill, noting that it: Creates a comprehensive regulatory framework for stablecoin payment issuers in Florida Aims to integrate state oversight with federal standards, particularly the federal Genius Act, to ensure consumer protection and financial stability Allows the Office of Financial Regulation (OFR) to apply for the state to become the regulatory authority for stablecoin issuers in Florida payment systems

FBBA founder marks the event

On March 6th, the same day the bill was passed, Samuel Armes, founder of FBBA, the largest BTC, crypto and Web3 advocacy organization in Florida, commented on the event on X. He stated that the bill has passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and Senator DeSantis is expected to sign it into law in less than a month. He also pointed out that Florida has been the leader of the Bitcoin world and will continue to lead, ensuring that it remains the Bitcoin Capital of the US and the world. Armes also thanked everyone who was a part of the process, including small players and big names like Zach Witkoff and Jason Holloway.

Although some critics have argued that the bill is unrelated to Bitcoin, the new stablecoin law will be beneficial to the entire industry, as stablecoins are an essential part of the ecosystem, connecting TradFi to DeFi. The latest event comes after another major achievement for the crypto industry. Kraken was granted access to the US Federal Reserve's main payment system on March 4.
