♦ Increased air traffic also depends on the strategy for expanding airlines. Aerial operators are introducing more and more routes from local level and, moreover, companies that do not have presence in Romania have announced the launch of routes, including Etihad Airways and Smartwings.

Local airports were transited by over 12.7 million passengers in the first six months of this year, 8% more than in the same period last year, according to the data of the Airports Association of Romania. This growth shows the growing appetite of people to travel, but also the fact that air operators introduce several aerial races from local airports. Much of the local air traffic is provided by Otopeni Airport, the largest terminal on the local level. In the first semester of this year, the airport in Bucharest had 7.8 million passengers. London, Istanbul, Rome, Bergamo, Vienna are the main destinations of airlines operating from Otopeni airport as a number of passengers, followed by Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid and Tel-Aviv. The second largest airport in the country according to the number of passengers is the one in Cluj, which had 1.6 million passengers between January and June this year, followed by Iasi, with 1 million passengers.
