A typical winter weather pattern will come to the Czech Republic. It used to be very common, with warmer winters it is understandably a bit rarer. It will be a winter variant away from the ocean. It means numerous snow showers and occasional snowfall, but significantly more often in the mountains and highlands. In lowlands and rain shadows, on the other hand, there is less precipitation, in some places almost none. Below 300 m above sea level, there will also be mixed precipitation. This option will come with a big wind, often a gale. From about 500 m above sea level, this means frequent snow tongues and drifts. This situation causes traffic problems. In the highlands there is a situation with tongues, on the highways there is a threat of dangerous white darkness during heavy snow showers. It is a situation that can lead to mass accidents on highways, because drivers do not adapt their driving to a sudden change in weather during a snow shower – ice is formed on the road even within two minutes. Visibility can drop below 100 m. Salt has no effect at that moment, on the contrary, it «melts» the snow from below and supports the formation of driven ice. The temperature will be constantly below zero from 400 m above sea level. The main snowfall and snow showers will come Tuesday and Wednesday, then likely again over the weekend. However, the height of the new snow will not be great. A little over 20 cm of snow will fall in the mountains, 10 cm of snow in the highlands and 0 to 5 cm in the lowlands. However, expect a really big gale from the northwest (damage to trees and power lines) on Tuesday and Wednesday. If it is connected with a line of snowfall, a typical weak winter storm may also appear – a frequent phenomenon in this situation. Formerly a common thing, lately becoming rarer due to warm winters.
