Key points
Today, the bank received approval from the country's regulatory authority to provide BTC and ETH trading services in Spain. Deutsche Bank and Société Générale are other European banks that offer Crypto exposure. The latest reports reveal that the efforts to adopt digital assets intensify in the EU. The Spanish Bank Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentia (BBVA) received approval from the country's regulatory authority to provide Bitcoin and Ethereum trading services.
BBVA will provide exposure to BTC and ETH to Spanish customers
According to an official report from Reuters, the Spanish bank confirmed the approval received from the National Regulatory Authority to provide BTC and ETH trading services, allowing its customers to buy, sell and transfer Crypto to its application. Approval comes after a regulatory process for several years for the bank's entry into the Crypto industry. In 2020, BBVA was planning to enter the digital assets sector, but the regulatory approval was only given now, when the small regulation enters into force throughout Europe. BBVA initially planned to launch its Crypto services in Switzerland, rather than from Spain or other countries in the European Union, because Switzerland has a clearer regulatory for Crypto under the Financial Market Supervisory Authority (Finma). The small regulation establishes uniform rules of the EU market for Crypto assets, and the entry of the EU regulation was officially applied in December 2024. In January 2025, BBVA also launched Crypto trading in Turkey through a local subsidiary, Garanti BBVA Kripto, a local platform operated by Guarantor BBVA. Bit2me, a crypto exchange founded in Spain in 2014, is used as a center for the bank's transactions.
Crypto adoption intensifies in Europe and USA
In addition to BBVA, other important banks are engaged in Crypto services throughout Europe. For example, Deutsche Bank offers Crypto custody with Taurus, a Crypto infrastructure leader from September 2023. At that time, Taurus announced that Deutsche Bank will capitalize on its custody and Tokenization technology, Active Tokenized and Digital Currency. Also, SG-Forge from Société Générale launches a Euro-supported stablecoin on Stellar Network. This extension will bring new opportunities for users and business to access a safe, transparent and scalable digital euro, supported by the stellar infrastructure. The announcement was made in February 2025. Crypto adoption intensifies in Europe as several banks engage in activities with digital assets. This appears in the context in which US digital assets are also increasing, Trump recently signing an executive order for a strategic Bitcoin reserve and a Crypto stock, and waiting for a new Stablecoin regulation until August. Also, the USC in the US has recently confirmed that the federal banking system can participate in certain BTC and Crypto activities.
