The publication event will take place on Saturday, December 16 at 5:00 p.m. in the building of the Zadn Synagogy in Tbe. We cordially invite representatives of the media and the public. Probe to the 1980s: Evidence of the times and civic initiatives The publication is unique, especially the collection of photographs that were shared in the 1980s by Pavel Heman, then a young veterinarian and talented photographer, now the former mayor of the city. The pictures show the condition of the habitat at the time of advancing devastation, overgrown with overgrown vegetation, with overturned tombstones. These photographs, which at that time could not be published for ideological reasons (it was recommended to photograph «current events, such as the celebration of the 1st of May»), became important documentary evidence and are now, after more than four decades, finally presented to the public. The author's aim was to capture the charm of this abandoned city and the decorativeness of the individual monuments before the habitat was swallowed up by the surrounding construction. Preservation of cultural heritage and memorials The publication maps the heroic strength of a group of volunteers, who are under the leadership of Prim. MUDr. Frantiek Veselh and with the help of Ing. she released arch. Jaroslav Klenovsk and later the caretaker Bohumr Pavlk to preserve the habitat. In the years 1983-1985, during the first renewal cycle, 516 square meters of stone enclosure walls were repaired and 523 foremen worked 12,511 hours, of which 3,607 were free. The volunteers devoted themselves to repairing the wall, mowing down the debris, and lifting the unstable gravestones, which weighed several hundred kilograms. As stated in the book, this event was one of the first manifestations of civil society activity at that time. Thanks to this, the Jewish settlement in Thebes was established, together with the Jewish quarter and the Basilica of St. Prokop, became part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage in 2003. The book also contains a valuable historical overview of the Jewish ghetto of Ahabites in Tebe prepared by Rudolf Fier and Jaroslav Klenovsk. The book will be available for purchase directly from the publication site on December 16, and will subsequently be available at the Tourist Information Center Nrodn dm and in the Kniha Trojan bookshop on Charles Square in Tbe. The release of the publication is an important reminder of recent history and shows that good will and civic commitment often mean more than a lack of resources. The book is a tribute to the people who contributed to the preservation of this valuable city, a witness to the lives of the Jews who created the city of Thebes.
